Hi everyone!
I want you to raise your hand if you’ve gone for more than an hour today without looking at your phone. I’m Shireen and I used to be addicted to my cell phone. Look around you. How many hands do you see? From this little experiment it’s clear we’re addicted to our phones.
At exam time we would normally be studying, right? Didn’t you use to worry about end of semester grades coming up? All of that stress ... you know how it is. I used to spend my days texting, tweeting and scrolling. I wouldn’t eat, let alone study. And then, at night, my friends would ping me right and left, all of them worried that they were going to fail. So I decided to do something about it.
I cleaned my room. No, not my bedroom. That stayed as messy as ever! But I did clean a room – my digital room. And you know what I found out? That it is definitely possible to control it instead of it controlling me.
I also challenged myself to get off social media for a week. It changed my life. No joke. The first couple of days, it did feel strange. I only communicated in person, so in the evenings I spent much more time doing homework and watching movies, and I was more focused and alert. And then I got used to it. My friends started putting down their phones when they hung out with me. I started looking around at my environment, noticing things, feeling things. It really did change my life!
Under no circumstances do I expect you to stop using social media forever, so I came up with NEW RULES for using our devices wisely, and here they are:
• Allow yourself only three apps and delete the apps that you use the most (I know ... it’s hard!).
• Go grayscale!
• Don’t take your phone to the school cafeteria or restroom.
• Remove notifications and turn off your phone’s sound during times you know you shouldn’t be on social media or shouldn’t be disturbed.
• Charge your phone and laptop anywhere but in your bedroom.
• Make sure you are seeing your friends instead of texting them.
• Go on dates instead of flirting online.
Now, I challenge you to stay off social media for one week, just like I did! I’ll call it SHIREEN’S CLEAN TEEN CHALLENGE. At the end of the week, share your experiences (the highs and lows) at our next assembly. Our principal agreed to give a prize to whoever can show no social media use for a week. THE STORY OF MY ANCESTOR.
In the 19th century, my ancestor Elizabeth arrived in Australia as a prisoner ! This is her story.
She lived in London in 1835. At that time, lots of Londoners were poor and starving. One day, as she was walking past a bakery, Elizabeth couldn’t resist stealing a piece of bread. Unfortunately, a bobby caught her red-handed. She tried to escape but she couldn’t and was sent to court for that crime.
Elizabeth was sentenced to deportation as a convict. She was deported to Australia just because of a stolen piece of bread! During the ship voyage, she met Jane and Oliver who were also deportees. They quickly became friends.
Jane was considered to be a “bad woman” because she was a mother but she wasn’t married. And of course, her baby was taken away from her before she was sent to Australia. As for Oliver, he was so poor that he had no choice but to beg in the streets. Rich people didn’t like beggars, that’s why he was transported for life.
Elizabeth and her two friends knew absolutely nothing about Australia. They couldn’t imagine it was so far away from England. In fact, it was a 250-day journey.
When they arrived in Australia, they were washed and inspected by British officers. Their names were registered.
Then, the men and women were separated and sorted out according to their skills. Most of the men worked as builders, of roads, bridges, hospitals…whereas the women had to work in clothes factory or as domestic servants to British officers.
After a few years, Elizabeth was given a pardon so she was able to open a small shop and to start her new life.

As Mike Johnson stares down a serious threat to his speakership, he’s taking steps to show alignment with the most powerful figure in the Republican Party: Donald Trump.

Johnson has made plans to trek down to Mar-a-Lago on Friday to appear at a joint news conference with the former president to deliver remarks on “election integrity” – a topic Trump cares deeply about. The development was first reported by CNN.

Today, I'm thrilled to present my internship experience at Boulanger as part of my preparation for the National Higher in Sales Techniques for my B. Tech degree.
Firstly, let me introduce the shop. Boulanger is a leading retail chain of stores in electronics and home appliances. They provide range of high-quality products, excellent customer service, and innovative shopping experience. There are over 150 stores across France and a robust online presence.
I worked under the guidance of my tutor, and I'd like to share now my experience as an intern in this company.
Throughout my internship, my tutor, Kevin, was supportive. He has a good knowledge of the shop and was a patient tutor providing good guidance and valuable feedback.
Speaking of duties, I was given a lot of responsibilities. I assisted customers with product inquiries. I had to demonstrate the features and benefits of various products. I sometimes processed transactions. I therefore developed essential sales skills such as active listening and problem-solving, or handling with the customers’ objections. These are key skills for success in the retail industry.
I also learned the sales techniques of upselling and cross-selling to boost the sales. I suggested complementary products or upgrades. For example, I always tried to persuade the customer to buy a more expensive product or add additional services such as the insurance guarantee. Another example is when a customer is buying a new laptop, I may recommend a laptop bag, a wireless mouse, or an antivirus software as complementary items.
In conclusion, my internship at Boulanger has been a great opportunity to develop and gain new skills. Interning at Boulanger was enriching, and I am now much more confident. I think interning is the golden ticket to a full-time job after my degree.
